History in a Pecan Shell

Named after an “official” of the Santa Fe Railroad (no first name known), Wellman appeared around 1918 as a shipping point. There were enough children in the vicinity to warrant a school, which opened in 1923. A post office was granted in 1925 and a Church of Christ was established in 1928.

During the Great Depression, Wellman had a population of just 40, but by 1940 it had grown to 200 residents. It has remained around that level (or slightly more) ever since.
