History in a Pecan Shell

Henry T. Dunn opened a store south of the Red River in 1878. Originally called Big Wichita Valley, the name underwent a change when Dunn sold the store to Charlie Taylor. The name Taylor had been taken, so Charlie used his Christian name. It became a popular trading post for farmers, ranchers and some Indians from across the river.

A post office was granted in 1882 and by the mid-1920s the population was over 200. The post office closed during the Great Depression and the population moved away. From the 70s to the 90s, the estimated population was a mere 65 persons.
