History in a Pecan Shell

Named after local tanner and blacksmith, for Milas “Miles” Bagwell, the community appeared alongside the tracks of the Texas and Pacific Railroad around 1875-66.

There is evidence that the Robbinsville post office (2.5 miles south) was moved north to Bagwell in 1876.

By the mid 1880s, the community had most essential businesses to serve a population of 200.

The population reached 300 by 1914, 400 by the end of the 1920s and 350 after WWII.

U.S. Highway 82 bypassed the community in 1961, reducing the population to 195 by the mid 1960s. From a population of 108 (1980 Census) it climbed to 150 for the 1990 census – remaining there through 2000.

Photographer's Note:
“Even though Bagwell is rich in history, today it is just a quiet community with access to some larger towns. It’s the kind of relaxing place that a lot of people like to visit.” - Gerald Massey
