History in a Pecan Shell

Named for land grant recipient John Bassett, the community was granted a post office in 1882. Two years later there was a reported population of twenty-five and it was known as a railroad shipping point.

In 1890 the communityreported a population of 100 but it went into a slow decline (75 in 1914) and 58 in the mid 1920s.

The post office closed ts doors in the late 1950s and from a population of just 40 in 1982, it has grown to nearly 400 for both the 1990 and 2000 census.
