History
on a PinheadGreggton
started life as Willow Springs, a stop on the Texas and Pacific Railroad in the
early 1870s. It became a shipping point for area farmers. The first population
count comes from the 1920 census when 180 people called Willow Springs
home. (Not to be confused with the Willow
Springs in Fayette County)
A post office was granted in 1932 and it’s
assumed the name was changed at that time. The East Texas oil boom swelled the
town to a population of 1,500 by 1936. The same boom launched over a hundred businesses.
By
the late 1940s the population was nearly 2,400. Thereafter it has been included
in the general population of Longview.
The
town was annexed by Longview
in the 1950s although the post office remained open until May of 1960.
Although
it is now part of Longview,
the old brick commercial district remains distinct. |
