SMART WIFE

by David Knape

I have to admit it
my wife is smarter than I am
though it pains me to say it

it took me many years
to acknowledge the fact
despite the fact that it was obvious
to all others

for whatever reason
she married down
I must have had some attraction for her
but I don't know what it was

perhaps it was the fact that I could dance
perhaps it was because I made her laugh
or perhaps it was the fact that she was so young
only 14 at the time

it certainly was not my intelligence
or potential

still she has carried me all these many years
with little praise and no compensation

how do you explain that?

maybe she's not so Smart after all.
