History in
a Pecan Shell
The town was founded
in the 1780s by Spanish settlers probably of José de Escandón's group.
Prior to 1848, the community was on both sides of the Rio Grande.
The name is from the Spanish word for crane, birds that were once
abundant on ponds that were once nearby. Postal authorities granted
the town a post office in 1912 under the name Grulla, but the
community is known by the proper La Grulla.
In 1940 the town had only 250 people living there. Today the town
has both a Catholic and Mennonite church (Iglesia Hermanos Mennonitos
de Grulla) as well as a junior high and elementary school.
The community has an old brick church which dates to 1849 when it
was built on the trail of the Oblate Brothers that ran between Brownsville
and Laredo. |
