History in a Pecan Shell

Vicente de Ynojosa was issued a Spanish land grant in 1797 which included present-day La Villa. By 1800 a community was established. With the arrival of the railroad in the late 1800s, the region received an influx of Anglo settlers.

The town became a shipping point on the SAAP (San Antonio and Aransas Pass) railroad in the late 1920s and a post office was granted about the same time.

La Villa had a population of 100 in 1933, doubling to 200 residents by 1947. Ten years later the population remained the same but by that time, it had added a ISD and more businesses had opened. Growth has been slow but steady over the intervening years and the 1990 census county counted nearly 1,400 residents. The 2010 census reported 1,957.
