Are There Cows in Texas?

A Photo Essay by John Stankewitz
(and the general story behind his fascination with cows.)

Photos and Captions by John Stankewitz
I was born in Denison, Texas but being in a millitary family, I was raised around the world (twelve different stops). As a child in school I was always proud of being born in and from the big state of Texas. A constant reminder of my home state was the answer I would always get from my Mom when I asked a stupid or very obvious question. In a stern sarcastic tone she would answer "Are there Cows in Texas??" Now, as I travel around Texas looking for things to photograph I pass by many cows in many fields and I am always reminded of her question. I answer it by saying to myself: "Of course there are!!" Besides being a fixture on the Texas landsccape, they are also a very interesting and lovable lot.
