History on a Pinhead

Although settlement in the area dates to the early 19th century, there was no community as such until the mid 1920s. The community was the brainchild of one Clarence Ayers who at that time was president of the American Life Insurance Company. The company sponsored initial development. It was named after the California city of the same name.

The 1940 census showed forty residents being served by two stores and five years later it had acquired ten additional residents. It is now considered a "dispersed rural community" with a count of 83 people for the 2010 census.
