History in a Pecan Shell

Hondo Caņon was the original name of the community when a post office was opened just north of the current town in 1878. The town moved in 1899 and was renamed to honor Tarpley Prickett, the son of the postmaster (John Prickett).

By 1900 a blacksmith and a store were doing business in Tarpley, and a church and school were built sometime later.

The town had a population of just 25 in the mid-1920s - before reaching its high-water mark of 40 in the mid 1980s. It has since leveled off at 30.
