Editor's Note:
Worthy of inclusion? Absolutely. However, if a town of Unworthy, Texas
appears, we may decide not to include it. "Unworthy" could easily
apply to several places in Texas but Worthy is one of those towns
most likely to be forgotten. The Handbook of Texas does not
include Worthy in its listing of towns.
History on a Map and Envelope
The former town of Worthy fits the ghost town category to a tee. There
may be no physical remains, but it's worthy of inclusion because tangible
proof exists, The Texas General Land Office has (at least two) maps
showing it - and The
John J. Germann Collection has a postmarked envelope from Worthy.
Mr. Germann also includes the following tidbit from the letter and
an observation:
"The enclosed letter, by the way, mentions that although the cost
of living is high in Uvalde
County in 1913, it does not bother the family much because they
have the chickens, eggs, milk, hogs, etc. to help out, plus there's
plenty of wood on the place.
Commentary: Something must have begun to bother the family, though,
because by 1920 Fred Scott and his family had returned to ranching
in Waller County
near Houston." - John
