History in a Pecan Shell

Cotton farmer M. C. Clayton moved his ginning business here from Fannin County in the early 1950s. He then opened a store for his employees and a café for the farmers bringing their crops in. The Clayton Gin became a favorite meeting place and the industrious (and evidently fair-dealing) Mr. Clayton essentially built a community here.
A Baptist church was organized in the early 1960s and in the mid 1980s the population reached 116 – a figure that has remained through the 2000 census.
