History in a Pecan Shell

The community dates from the late 1830s when it was known as “Dever’s Woods.”

Thomas Philip and John Dever are the namesakes. The railroad expansion of the late 1870s made it a stop on the Texas and New Orleans Railroad and in 1874 the community was granted a post office.

The 1880 census reported a respectable (for the times) population of 100. In 1892 the community’s name was shortened to Devers, Texas. Irrigation allowed for a healthy rice culture although the community failed to grow. It remained at just 210 residents in the mid 1970s but in the following ten years it grew to 570 before declining again.

Discoveries of gas and oil have benefitted the landowners and rice continues to be a major economic contributor. The population in 1990 was given as 318 which has increased 416 for the 2000 census.
