History in
a Pecan Shell
The Compere brothers
of Abilene are credited
with founding the town in 1903 when they bought part of the AJ Ranch
in anticipation of the arrival of the Kansas City, Mexico and Orient
Railway. They named it in honor of railroad promotion manager W. W.
Sylvester. The railroad arrived in 1905 and properity followed. All
essential businesses opened in short order and by 1909 the population
was a healthy 600.
By 1940 the population had shrunk to slightly over 400 Sylvesterites
and the decline has continued to the current 102. |
