History
in a Pecan Shell
Supposedly named because so many of the residents were named John,
the town got its post office in 1900 and it became a stop on the Paris
and Mount Pleasant Railway in 1913. From a population of only 75 in
1910, it declined to a mere 15 during the depths of the Great Depression,
rebounding to 50 just before WWII.
It swelled to 200 shortly after the war, but the railroad pulled up
tracks in 1959 and soon the post office closed its doors. The population,
however, has managed to stay at a respectable 175 - although no one
knows for sure how many residents are naming their sons John.
